What a stairlift installation actually involves

Most people have never bought one before. Here is the whole job, start to finish, with nothing hidden in the small print.

A free survey first

We measure the staircase, check the width at its tightest point, look at where the lift will park and find the nearest socket. It takes about half an hour and costs nothing.

Fitted to the stairs

The rail bolts to the treads of your staircase, not to the wall. No structural work, no replastering, and nothing that cannot be undone later.

Tested and handed over

We run the lift through its full travel, check the safety edges and the seatbelt, then stay until whoever is using it has driven it themselves and is happy.

Usually one visit

A straight stairlift is normally in and working the same morning. A curved rail is made to match your stairs, so the wait is in the manufacturing, not the fitting.

A price before we start

You get the figure in writing after the survey. It covers the lift, the installation and taking the old one away if there is one. There is no hard sell.

Your house left as found

Dust sheets down, old lift removed, packaging taken with us. The only thing different when we leave is that the stairs work for you again.

Straight staircases

Straight stairlift installation

If your staircase runs in one unbroken line from bottom to top with no bend, turn or half-landing, you need a straight stairlift. It is the simpler and cheaper of the two, because the rail is cut from stock rather than built to order.

That has a practical consequence worth knowing: a straight stairlift can often be surveyed one week and installed the next, and sometimes faster if the situation is urgent.

  • Rail cut to length and fitted to your stair treads
  • Models available for narrow staircases
  • New or reconditioned — the fitting is identical
  • Folds flat against the wall when it is not in use
  • Usually installed in a morning
Curved and turning staircases

Curved stairlift installation

Any staircase with a bend, a quarter turn, a half-landing or a spiral needs a curved stairlift. The rail is manufactured specifically for your stairs, which is why the survey matters so much: every measurement feeds into a part that is then built once.

It costs more than a straight lift and takes longer to arrive. What you get for that is a rail that follows the staircase exactly, hugging the inside edge so the stairs stay usable for everyone else in the house.

  • Rail built to match your exact staircase
  • Handles bends, half-landings and spirals
  • Can run round a turn without a second lift
  • Powered levelling keeps the seat flat through the curve
  • Fitted on the inside edge wherever the stairs allow

The process

How a stairlift installation works

Four steps from the first phone call to a working lift. No deposits taken before you have seen a price.

1

You call us

Tell us roughly what the staircase does — straight, or does it turn? We can give you a sense of the options on the phone before anyone visits.

2

Free home survey

We measure properly, check the tight spots and talk through which lift suits the stairs and the person using it. Around half an hour, and there is no charge and no obligation.

3

A written quote

One figure covering the lift, the installation and removing any old lift. You decide in your own time. We do not chase and we do not pressure.

4

Installation day

We fit the rail, set up the lift, test it through its full travel and show you how to use it — including what to do in a power cut and how to use the remote controls.

One thing worth saying plainly

Nobody should be buying a stairlift under pressure. If a survey shows that what you actually need is a repair to the lift you already have, or a reconditioned machine instead of a new one, that is what we will tell you.

Makes

The stairlifts we install

We are independent, so we are not tied to one manufacturer. That means the recommendation follows your staircase rather than a sales target.

Acorn

Acorn

The make we fit most often, straight and curved. Well supported, widely available and straightforward to get parts for years later.

Acorn 130 straight · Acorn 180 curved
Stannah

Stannah

A long-established British make with a strong reputation. We install and service them, and we repair them whoever originally supplied the lift.

Straight and curved models
Brooks

Brooks

Part of the Acorn group, and a common sight in London homes. Parts availability is good and the controls are simple to live with.

Straight and curved models
Handicare

Handicare

Known for narrow rail designs, which matters on a tight London staircase where every centimetre of walking width counts.

Straight and curved models
Bruno

Heavier-duty machines with higher weight capacities, including outdoor models for steps up to a front or back door.

We also work with steplifts and wheelchair platform lifts where a stairlift is not the right answer. Ask and we will say honestly whether we can help.

A cheaper route

Reconditioned stairlift installation

A reconditioned stairlift is a used machine that has been taken apart, worn parts replaced, cleaned and tested before it goes back out. For a straight staircase it is very often the sensible buy, and it costs considerably less than new.

The honest caveat: reconditioned works best on straight stairs. A curved rail is made for one specific staircase, so a second-hand curved lift rarely fits anywhere other than the house it came out of.

  • Stripped, repaired and tested before installation
  • Installed exactly as a new lift would be
  • Considerably cheaper than buying new
  • Best suited to straight staircases
  • Ask about what is in stock when you call

Questions

Stairlift installation — your questions answered

How long does a stairlift installation take?
A straight stairlift is usually fitted in a morning — typically two to four hours from arriving to showing you how to use it. A curved stairlift takes longer on the day, but the bigger difference is before the day: the rail is built to match your staircase, so there is a manufacturing wait first.
Does a stairlift have to be screwed to the wall?
No, and this is the question we are asked most. The rail fixes to the treads of the staircase, not to the wall. That means the wall is untouched and the installation works just as well on a staircase with a plastered or panelled side.
Will a stairlift fit my stairs?
Almost always. Narrow staircases are the usual worry and there are models made specifically for them. The only way to be certain is a survey, which is free and carries no obligation.
Do I need special wiring for a stairlift?
No. A stairlift runs on batteries that charge from an ordinary 13-amp socket, so there is no need for an electrician in most homes. Running on battery also means it still works in a power cut.
Do I have to pay VAT on a stairlift?
Often not. A stairlift supplied to someone who is chronically sick or disabled, for use in their own home, can be zero-rated for VAT under HMRC rules. We will tell you whether your situation qualifies and give you the declaration to sign — there is nothing to claim back afterwards.
What happens if it needs fixing later?
New stairlifts come with a manufacturer guarantee — 12 months on the Acorn models we fit most often. After that we service and repair the lifts we install, and plenty we did not. We are local, so a call-out is not a trip across the country.
Can you take out an old stairlift first?
Yes. Removing an old or broken lift is a normal part of the job, whoever originally supplied it.
Can I buy a reconditioned stairlift instead?
Yes, and for a straight staircase it is often the sensible choice. A reconditioned lift is a used machine that has been stripped, repaired and tested. It costs considerably less than new and we install it exactly the same way.
